More mess, less chaos: letting my toddler help in the kitchen.
When my first was born, my husband and I fully planned on doing the minimalist toy setup, kid-led play, and all the things that were — and honestly still are — really popular online.
We had the best intentions.
But in reality? We definitely have more toys than we need…
One thing we have stuck with though is involving our toddler in everyday life — especially in the kitchen.
We started with simple things:
mixing, pouring, handing ingredients over.
And gradually that turned into helping chop softer foods, grating cheese, and doing little meal prep tasks alongside me.
I’ve noticed a few things since starting this.
First — it definitely does not make cooking faster or cleaner.
There’s more mess.
More spills.
And sometimes it takes significantly longer.
But overall? There’s actually less chaos.
Instead of getting frustrated while I’m busy making dinner, my toddler is occupied helping and genuinely enjoys being included.
It’s also unexpectedly helped with picky eating.
My toddler used to eat almost everything and then slowly became more particular over time. But when she helps prepare meals, she’s so much more likely to try whatever we’re making.
I think a lot of toddlers are the same way. They just want to feel involved.
So while it may not make life easier in the traditional sense, I’d still absolutely recommend it.
It’s slower.
Messier.
Less efficient.
But somehow it also makes motherhood feel calmer and a little more intentional.
