Simple Toddler Activities for Cold Canadian Days

If you’re a Canadian mom, you know the feeling.

It’s freezing outside, the days are so long and dark, and your toddler has more energy than the energizer bunny.

Getting out isn’t always realistic—and sometimes you just don’t want to.

What “Scrunchy Activities” Look Like

For me, scrunchy toddler activities are:

  • Simple
  • Low effort
  • Flexible
  • Not meant to fill every second

I also try to lean toward more natural, simple options—using what we already have at home and avoiding overly complicated toys.

Easy Activities That Actually Work

Indoor fort
Couch cushions, pillows—whatever works. Easy and keeps them amused!

Baking together
From scratch or from a mix—just keeping it simple and involving them.

Colouring or stickers
Low effort and literally always a win.

Magnetic tiles
There is almost nothing that holds my children’s attention more.

Dance party
Perfect for burning off energy! Often you can even choose music you like.. or throw on some bluey theme songs.

Reading corner
Blankets, books, and getting lost in a good book (or twenty!)

A Gentle “Scrunchy” Approach

I try to make simple, more mindful choices when I can—using what we have, making things from scratch sometimes, and keeping things less overwhelming.

Some days none of this works because your toddler is cranky. You’re tired. The house feels chaotic.

That’s normal.

Keep it Simple

You don’t need a perfectly planned day to make it a good one.

Simple really is enough.

And if the day ends with snacks on the floor and a little extra screen time—you’re still doing a great job 🍁
